Friday 12th April 2013 will be etched in the minds of many Movillians for years to come especially a group of young ladies who represented Moville Community College in the All Ireland Senior Girls Final.
It had been a hard fought road for the ladies to reach the Final, Starting with the Ulster Final played against local rivals Carndonagh Community School. There had been a lot of rivalry leading up to this game but the Moville Ladies did the talking on the pitch when they hammered the Carndonagh team by 8-0.
The next step was the Semi Final and for this we had to face the girls of the Ursuline College in Sligo. This proved a tough game with the teams level 1-1 at half time. However Moville Ladies kept their cool and won the game 4-1.
The Final was against Christ The King College from Cork who had beatern us in the final last year. We knew we were in for a tough game but how tough was the question. We were certainly not going for a repeat of last years final. We wanted a different result this time round.
Five minutes into the game we were on our way with a 1-0 lead scored by Roma Mc Laughlin. This lead lasted all of tem minutes and by half time we were trailing 1-3. Still we were determined not to go out lying down and in the 53rd minute Gemma Mc Guinness made the score 2-3. Now the pressure was on our opponents as we came looking for an equaliser. We did miss a lot of chances mainly due to the good goal keeping of Christ the |King goalie. With just 8 minutes to the final whistle Gemma’s 2nd goal meant we were drawn 3-3.
This lead to extra time, 10 minutes each half and the pressure was on both sides to get that all important goal. No scores came to either team during the first period of extra time. The pressure was mounting but just 2 minutes into the second period of extra time Gemma’s golden boot scored her a hat trick and the score line was now 4-3. Could we possibly hold on to that lead for eight minutes? Under severe pressure we held Christ the King at bay and Moville Community College celebrated their first ever All Ireland Senior Girls title
